Panel Recap: The Venture Bros @ NYCC 2012

New York Comic Con 2012, probably the best year of this convention yet, kicked right off Friday for us here at Adult Swim Central. After our endeavors earlier in the day and a bit of wandering and feeling tired, we hit the IGN Theater at the Jacob Javits Convention Center for the first Adult Swim thing of the weekend, the Venture Bros panel.

Doc and Jackson present Let’s All Smoking!

The entire panel was set up to be a 60′s talk show starring, of course, Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick who touted the show as a Venture Bros-centric episode of the “classic” show Let’s All Smoking. Doc and Jackson spoke highly of what is actually their show while in character: “we love it! We’ve never seen it, we know nothing about it, but we love it.” Along with Doc and Jackson, Mike Sinterniklaas (Dean Venture) and Paul Boocock (Dr. Jonas Venture Sr.) sat on the panel to drink Fresca, smoke electronic cigarettes, answer questions, and talk Venture Bros. Air Supply was advertised to perform, but that was a lie.

In the three years I’ve been attending NYCC now, the Venture panels have been brilliant, of course, but none have had content– the show had always either been in the middle of production or all the news there was was given out at SDCC months prior. This year, though, the duo brought some goodies from Astrobase to show everyone. We were treated to two clips: one was from the upcoming Halloween special where Dean, Hank, and Dermott are out, donning Halloween costumes, in a dark patch of grass and trees nearby a creepy house. After a quick game of “not it”, Dean is sent to enter the creepy house with nothing but a flashlight while Dermott eggs him on and he and Hank deem Dean stupid or maybe brave for what he’s doing. The second clip brought us back in time, and onto a yacht. Jonas Venture Sr. is in the water, Action Man is on the boat, and Rusty is having fun with H.E.L.P.eR and a toy sword. The rest of Jonas’ group pulls up to pick him up for Jackie O and JFK’s wedding, and Jonas reveals his hidden tux under his wet suit and off they go. A really rough cut, because the episode isn’t finished, but still funny, and still a glaring example of the fact that new Venture Bros is coming.

Mike Sinterniklaas, Paul Boocock, Doc Hammer, and some Fresca

Speaking of roughly put together video, there was also a sizzle reel of Season 5 bits and pieces shown. Lemme tell ya: if this sizzle reel was any indication, Season 5′s gonna be one hell of a ride. Gary, Henchman 21, is now in SPHINX. Captain Sunshine is coming back. We’ll see more of the Council of 13. There’ll be a funeral. Rusty will find himself blindfolded in a room at some point. The Monarch and Dr. Mrs. The Monarch will have some cool new red-white-and-yellow costumes that look sort of like elegant robes. Something bloody will happen to the boys. Billy and Pete White will make an appearance or two. There are a lot of characters we’ll see next year, and from the looks of it, a lot of cool story and action as well. It looks like a wild season.

Season 5 won’t be coming until next year some time, which is a bummer, of course. But don’t fret, A Very Venture Halloween will air on October 28th at 11:30PM on where else but Adult Swim. Check out a preview of the special:

October 28th at 11:30PM, the whole thing will air. The show will be back next year. Doc and Jackson are still fabulous people. We’ll have a video interview with them soon, as well, so stay tuned for a bit more Venture Bros NYCC 2012 coverage right here!

Go Team Venture.
